Amblin’ Towards Amarillo

We packed up Rosie the Jeep this morning and left Carlsbad after lunch. We had a 4.5 hour drive to our next destination, Amarillo. Before leaving town, we stopped by and took a look at the Pecos River, which runs through Carlsbad.

On the Road Again

While traveling through New Mexico, one of the things we observed was that the car license plates are very pretty and colorful (particularly compared to ours in GA). What do you think?

As always on our drives, we saw some neat things as we passed through the little border towns between NM and TX.

Texas at Last!

Texas is our final state this road trip. With our usual trusty Roadside America app, we also sought out some stops on our route. Lubbock, Texas has a bunch of cool stuff to see. It is the birthplace (and final resting place) of the singer Buddy Holly, and the city has a whole center with displays, statues and murals dedicated to him.

Our absolute favorite stop along our path hands-down was this roadside find: Prarie Dog Town in Lubbock, Texas. Located inside of a public park, this colony was started in the 1930s in Lubbock and relocated to this park when it became a state park. We saw soooo many prarie dogs running around, including mamas and babies, and got some cool videos of the one closest to us who was issuing warning chatter (whether to us or to his prairie dog pals, I’m not sure). What a find! 😍

“Warning: humans approaching!”

Cadillac Ranch

With our overnight stop tonight being Amarillo, we read several travel articles that said the Cadillac Ranch in Amarillo was a must!! For those of you unfamiliar with it, the Cadillac Ranch is a public art exhibit created in 1974 that is currently displayed in a cow pasture by the interstate. It consists of ten Cadillacs buried nose-down in a line, and for some reason it is supposed to represent “the American Dream.” Even better, visitors are encouraged to bring their own spray paint to add their own “art” to the cars, so the cars are constantly changing and evolving. It’s pretty funky. We stopped by the field and added some “art” of our own to the cars, and then stopped by the adjacent gift shop to take a few more photos.

After the ranch, we headed to Pondesta Brewing Company for dinner and a local beer flight. It was pretty darn good!

It’s been another great day on the road trip. I can’t believe our 6.5 weeks of travel is already coming to a close this Sunday! Tomorrow we head to Fort Worth to go visit our niece and her family, and our friends the Kerns as well. Will post again from Fort Worth as our last stop on this trip. Please let us say again how much having friends and family follow along with our travels and like, comment on, and read our blogs has meant to us. It makes our travels even better each time we hear from y’all. Thanks for adventuring with us!

What a great post! I loved all the Caddy’s and at first feared Rob wasn’t going to appear and entertain us all. But he never disappoints, that guy! So fun you added yourselves to much of the scenery there and I loved them all. Didn’t know you were there painting at first and then eagerly sought out your own special markings. Go RL and BL and UCF! Cool that Buddy Holly has his own park and tributes. I didn’t know. Super fun place.

Even the beer look cool and refreshing and you guys didn’t look as red-faced as further west. What an adventure to one day be down in the humongous caverns and the next to be in the sands and then on to the desert. with very sophisticated Prairie dogs. I think I love them. I am so enjoying this trip! Hate to think it, but you two will be really boring when you retire again. LOL. 😁🥱🤠🤡

Enjoy your upcoming visits and time with the babies. Pix, please!! (To me every kid picture looks like a Seewoester.) Going to bed, as Mrs Bonggren – now Scully – is coming here in the AM after a doc appt. and I will drive us up to Oak Hill to Goodrich’s. I really like that place. 🙂

Sleep well and welcome back easterly. May all the ACs blow cool and you two dream on.

    Love you! Mom
